August 13, 2018 - Last week four Reliance Health clinicians were trained on how to provide auricular acupuncture as part of a Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services’ initiative to implement the treatment into clinical services. So, what it auricular acupuncture, and how does it help those with mental health diagnoses?
Auricular Acupuncture is a type of acupuncture, specifically done on the ear(s). The ears contain points that connect to pathways within the entire body. When pressure, or specific sterilized needles are used on these points, endorphins are released promoting both immune and emotional health. Dr. Michael Smith, Director of Lincoln Recovery Center in New York, developed the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) protocol for ear acupuncture as way to help individuals achieve balance and control while providing a peaceful, calming and empowering effect.
The NADA protocol promotes the use of 5 points within the outer ear. These 5 points include Sympathetic, Shen Men, Kidney, Liver, and Lung (see image below). Sympathetic relates to the emotional nervous system, alleviating stress, disease of the digestive system, and helps the respiratory system. The Shen Men, or “Spirit Gate” helps to alleviate anxiety, control nervousness, and provides a general relaxing effect. The Kidney promotes longevity and life force. This point also cleanses damage caused by drug and alcohol abuse while working to calm fears and strengthen the nervous system. The Liver relates to emotional balance, stabilizing impulsive reactions and behaviors. Finally, the Lung is said to provide the balance of life force itself and can help cleanse the body of inhaled toxins.
The Reliance Health Outpatient Clinic is excited to introduce the use of auricular acupuncture. We will start using this treatment in group settings where participants will sit together quietly and comfortably for 30-45 minutes for up to 10 sessions. Participants can choose to have one to five needles inserted, or, can choose to have seeds or beads placed on the points in place of needles. In conjunction with the auricular acupuncture, individuals will continue to receive one-one therapy and, if applicable, medication services. Only those trained as ADSs (Acu-Detox Specialists) will be allowed to administer the treatment, which, in time, may be extended to individual sessions.
Would you try auricular acupuncture to enhance your mental wellness? What other alternative therapies are you interested in?
